After the peaceful surrender of the city of Salzburg to the American troops under Major General John Wilson “Iron Mike” O'Daniel, the soldiers Audie Murphy and Charles P. Murry were awarded high medals at Salzburg Airport.
Today, Saturday, May 4, 2024, around 50 invited guests from America, Poland, Germany and Austria came to Salzburg Airport to unveil a memorial plaque for two of the great soldiers of American history in the Second World War on this special day. When the 3rd US Infantry Division crossed the river Saalach in Salzburg in the early hours of May 4, 1945 and rolled through the streets of Salzburg city center in convoy shortly before noon of the same day, the war was finally over for the people of Salzburg, much to their relief. On both sides, people from different nations contributed to Salzburg's surrender without fighting. One of the outstanding personalities in the events of those days was Lieutenant Audie L. Murphv, who is considered the most decorated soldier of the Second World War on the American side. For his bravery in the last years of the war, he was awarded the Medal of Honor and the Medal of Merit by Lieutenant General Alexander M. Patch Jr., commander of the 7th Army, on June 2 of the same year at the place where the memorial plaque was unveiled today, Salzburg Airport. In future, this commemorative plaque will catch the eye of the many travelers who use Salzburg Airport as they enter the roof terrace. In keeping with the history of the airport, it has been placed directly under the Salzburg Airport time table.
