Wizz Air returns to Salzburg / Initially three routes planned from Salzburg / Further development of new routes on track
The Airline Wizz Air announced its launch in Salzburg back in May 2020. At that time, nobody could have guessed how far-reaching the consequences of the Covid pandemic would be for aviation. "With the landing bans in the intended destinations, the planned flight connections unfortunately had to be discontinued," says Bettina Ganghofer, Managing Director of Salzburg Airport. "We have remained in close contact with Wizz Air over the past few years. We were already hoping that the question was not whether Wizz Air would return to Salzburg, but only when," Ganghofer continued. During and even after the pandemic, the entire European flight offering was turned upside down and sometimes greatly reduced. The effects of the crisis hit the entire European aviation sector and are still being felt today. Salzburg Airport has now largely recovered from the crisis and is looking positively towards the coming winter season. However, it is likely to take until 2025 before the pre-crisis level is reached.
"We are all the more pleased that the Hungarian airline will be adding Salzburg to its range of destinations as a second strategic partner in Austria alongside Vienna. We will initially start with London Luton in February 2024 and add Bucharest and Skopje to our flight program in summer 2024. We will continue to work intensively on expanding the range of routes in the coming weeks," says Ganghofer, looking ahead to the coming season.
The flight connection to London Luton is perfect for the start of winter, especially for bringing skiers to Salzburg and the surrounding winter sports regions. In summer, Bucharest and Skopje will be added to the range of exciting destinations in south-eastern Europe. The two capital cities in the Balkans are considered important economic centers and are therefore just as interesting for business tourism as they are for travelers looking for new destinations. London Luton, Bucharest and Skopje can therefore soon be reached NONSTOP from Salzburg.
Wizz Air will initially launch three direct flights in 2024, which will significantly strengthen the Salzburg aviation market. "We are delighted to resume the long-awaited flights from Salzburg to Bucharest and Skopje and to introduce a new route to London. This expansion brings Europe's most sustainable airline to Salzburg, offering travelers three exciting destinations and the opportunity to explore remarkable and iconic capital cities with Wizz Air. We can't wait to launch these routes and offer our Austrian passengers low fares with the highest quality on board," said Valeria Bragarenco, Corporate Communications Manager Wizz Air.
