Salzburg Airport is now providing eight all-electric ITW GPUs (Ground Power Units) for airlines. These modern devices, which supply aircraft with power while they are stationary on the ground, have been rented from HiSERV. The GPUs ensure the power supply for on-board electronics, air conditioning and other essential systems without the aircraft engines having to run. “We are proud to be the first airport in Austria to realize two thirds of our power supply for aircraft on the ground fully electrically. This not only significantly reduces fuel consumption and emissions, but also underlines the airport's commitment to a sustainable future,” says Nicolas Karres, Station Management, Senior Expert Salzburg Airport.
Renting from HiSERV is an ideal solution, especially during the busy winter peak season, when the demand for ground power for aircraft increases at short notice. It makes it possible to react flexibly to seasonal requirements and at the same time meet the airport's sustainability targets.
“This is the final success delivery story in 2024! HiSERV is proud that 8 fully electric ITW GPU´s are running at Salzburg Airport from now onwards. This gives Salzburg Airport a huge ecological footprint. With this additional GSE the airport is fully prepared for their winter operation 2024/2025”,says Wolfgang Fasching, Head of Commercials bei HiSERV.
The switch to electric GPUs is in line with the EU regulation “Fit for 55”, which aims to replace fossil fuels in the area of aircraft power supply. Salzburg Airport is thus taking on a pioneering role and sending a strong signal for environmentally friendly innovations in aviation.
